Estonian language immersers to share experiences at international conference in Germany
01.10.2010
An international conference entitled ‘CLIL 2010 In Pursuit of Excellence’, being held from 30 September to 2 October in Eichstätt, Germany, will bring together those promoting and implementing integrated language and subject studies from all over Europe. Language immersion coordinators from the Our People Integration and Migration Foundation and language immersion teachers from Estonia will be sharing their experiences with other attendees at the event.
Integrated subject and language studies – which also go by the acronym CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) – have been used at different levels of Estonian schooling for many years. The language immersion method, which has been successfully practised in the country for a decade, is based on CLIL. CLIL is gathering more and more recognition and followers around the world as a part of multicultural education.

Language immersion was launched in Estonia in 1992. It is one of the most effective methods of bilingual learning. It requires a systematic approach, uniformity of methodology and a tried and tested theoretical basis enabling comparison on an international scale – and these are also its greatest strengths. 30 schools and 31 kindergartens around Estonia have joined the language immersion programme.
