Representatives of about 140 ethic nationalities live in Estonia and they often gather into national culture societies and associations. National culture societies are active keepers and introducers of their respective culture, traditions and language.
Most often, the range of activities that the culture societies of national minorities organise include choir singing, dancing, amateur theatre, art, literature, various hobby clubs, etc. Several societies ensure that the children born in Estonia and their offspring learn to communicate in their native tongue, for which the Sunday Schools of national culture societies have been established.
The activities of these societies are supported by the Estonian state through financial support as well as direct participation. The culture societies have been receiving public baseline funding since 1991. Since 2008, the Council for Ethnic Nationalities has been run by the Ministry of Culture, the aim of which is to make proposals for the development of and assist in promoting the cultural life and activity of national minorities in Estonia in compliance with the legislation of the Republic of Estonia.
