How can I become an Estonian citizen?
Print page
Most people obtain Estonian citizenship by birth, which is to say that at the time they are born, one or both of their parents is an Estonian citizen. However, you can also apply for Estonian citizenship if you are a citizen of another country by birth or if you have undefined citizenship. Obtaining citizenship by any means other than birth is known as ‘naturalisation’.

Adults applying for Estonian citizenship need to meet a number of conditions, one of which is passing an Estonian language examination and the examination of awareness of the Constitution and Citizenship Act of the Republic of Estonia. You can find more information about the conditions for applying for citizenship as an adult here.

In accordance with the Citizenship Act of the Republic of Estonia, those under the age of 15 can apply for citizenship through a simplified procedure. More detailed information is available here.

NB! According to the Estonian Republic Citizenship Act §1 Chapter 2 an Estonian citizen is not allowed to be a citizen of any other country at the same time.
