Estonian language examination
Print page
In determining the compulsory language skills level of individuals, the language skills levels set out in the European language learning framework document are taken as a basis. National examinations are organised in Estonia at four levels: A2, B1, B2 and C1.

In order to obtain Estonian citizenship, the applicant must take and pass the Estonian language examination at the B1 level as a minimum. You can also apply for citizenship on the basis of language examination certificates previously issued. People born on or before 1 January 1930 are not required to take the written part of the language examination.

A wide range of preparatory material is available for the examination. You can also arrange a free consultation prior to your examination, at which you can ask any questions related to it.

The Estonian language level examinations are organised by the National Examination and Qualification Centre. Information about the time and place of examinations and registering for examinations can be found on their website www.ekk.edu.ee, as well as preparatory materials and available consultation times.
